Defending US Open Champion Withdraws

INTERNATIONAL: Austria's Dominic Thiem will not defend his US Open title. The world number six withdrew from the tournament late on Wednesday, after injuring his wrist. Thiem suffered the wrist injury back in June at the Mallorca Open. It also meant he missed out on Wimbledon.

He took to Twitter on Wednesday night to say that his wrist wasn’t much better and that he’d miss the rest of the 2021 season. This is the second year running that the defending champion at Flushing Meadows has withdrawn from the event. Last year it was Rafael Nadal who pulled out because of the pandemic. The US Open runs from the 30th of August to the 12th of September.

That drove a rally in the Philadelphia semiconductor index (.SOX). read more </p><p>Apple (AAPL.O) and Microsoft rose more than 1%, while Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google-owner Alphabet (GOOGL.O) added more than 2%, with all four companies making substantial contributions to the Nasdaq's increase. </p><p>All 11 S&P 500 sector indexes rose, led by materials (.SPLRCM), up 2.26%, followed by a 2.06% gain in communication services (.SPLRCL). </p><p>Data earlier in the day showed the U.S. economy contracted less than initially thought in the second quarter, dispelling some fears that a recession was underway. </p><p>Traders see a slightly greater likelihood of a third 75-basis-point interest hike from the Fed at its policy meeting next month, compared with a 50-basis-point increase.
